World Class Portage Lake Fishing

For the adventuresome we have ten portage lakes to add to the awesome angling opportunities available at Canada North Lodge. These lakes offer some of the very finest fishing opportunities that a fishermen could possibly expect. Our Conservation Policies have protected these lakes for years . . no fish are taken off these lakes . . each year they multiply in numbers and grow larger in size. It is possible on some days to actually catch several trophies in one day. The number of fish and size of the fish caught on these lakes are a real spoiler for our guests. This is fishing at it's best.

Pictures like those above are just an example of what our fishing is all about. The walleye pictured is 30.5" and the northern pike is a 48" beauty. Both were returned to the lake unharmed after a quick picture and proper handling. Alive, well, and growing, some other angler will have a the challenge of enjoying the trill of landing a real trophy. This is what World Class Fishing is all about.

The portage trips are short usually 1/4 mile or less.  Some ask what is a portage . . they are lakes reached by boat right off of our main lake system  - then a short hike over a cleared portage trail to the lake. The boats and motors are on site, all you need is your gear for the day. The lakes offer excellent Northern Pike, Smallmouth, and Canada walleye fishing.

Portage Lake Details:

  • The lakes are scheduled daily at the lodge to ensure fair distribution to all guests.

  • One portage trip per guest is assured. Additional portage trips can be booked if portage trips are open after the days scheduling.

  • The portage trips are included in our Plan 1 and Plan 2 package price at no additional charge.

  • A  daily boat and motor charge will apply for those bringing their own boats and wanting to do a portage trip. We are not charging for the use of the lake - just for the boat, motor and gas which is not included in the Plan 3 package.

  • A guide is required for all portage lakes.

The portage lakes, the species, the number of boats available, and the number of guests allowed per day on these lakes are as follows:

Narrow Lake - CONSERVATION POLICY in effect on this lake - same as on main lake system - the release of all Walleyes over 18" and the release of all Northern Pike over 27".
  • Excellent Walleye & Northern Pike fishing. Narrow Lake is directly off Big Woman Lake about 28 miles North of the lodge. Travel time by boat is about 1 hour. The portage is an easy portage, 1/4 mile long. The lake is about 13 miles long and is narrow. We have (3) 16' boats on location, powered by 20hp Johnson engines - 6 guests per day.

Quartz Lake - CONSERVATION POLICY in effect on this lake - same as on main lake system - the release of all Northern Pike over 27".
  • Excellent angling for Northern Pike. The sizes are not trophy but the quantity of fish caught in a day is often unbelievable. A great place for lots of action. The younger lads love it. Quartz Lake is just off of Big Woman Lake, 24 miles north of the lodge. Travel time by boat is usually about 50 minutes. The portage trip is our longest portage, but a good portage, mostly on solid rock and is good even in the very wet rainy days. 2 boats and motors at this location - 4 guests per day.

R & R Lake - OUR CONSERVATION POLICY on this lake is entirely " Catch & Release".

  • The lake is well known for it's trophy class and World Class Fishing for Northern Pike, and Walleye. Not to mention the awesome number of Walleyes that can be caught in a day. Catching 35" to 44" Northern Pike is quite common and can be considered a good bet for catching one in a days time. It is a lake that is in great demand. R & R Lake is a double portage - our longest portage - with a very good trail - Not a hard portage except for the distance. Total portage is a 1/2 mile walk. Not a big lake at all - just a average size lake that can be fished in one day - round bowl shaped lake - as wide as it is long. No fish are taken out, none are allowed for shore lunch. A box lunch is packed. 2 boats and motors at this location - 4 guests per day.

Spot Lake - OUR CONSERVATION POLICY on this lake is entirely "Catch & Release".
  • Known for it's trophy Small Mouth Bass. A good day produces 30 to 40 nice Small Mouth Bass. Sizes range up to 6 pounds. A good bet you can catch several big smallmouth during a day of fishing. Spot Lake produces Trophy Northern Pike and  Walleyes. The total number of fish that can be caught on this lake is unbelievable.  The lake is located just off of Big Bear Lake - about 12 miles from the main lodge - a 25 minute travel by boat. The portage is short. 2 boats and motors at this location - 4 guests per day.

Little Walleye Lake - OUR CONSERVATION POLICY on this lake is entirely " Catch & Release".
  • Don't let the name mislead you. The lake is well known for it's quantity and quality fishing for Walleyes and Trophy Northern Pike. A fisherman spoiler when the fishing is at peak. About 25 minutes by boat from the main lodge. A very small lake. A double portage. 1 boat and motor at this location - 2 guests per day.

Mystery Lake - OUR CONSERVATION POLICY on this lake is entirely " Catch & Release".
  • Mystery Lake provides excellent angling opportunities for Walleye and Northern Pike. and is accessed by triple portage through Spot Lake. A high demand lake because of it's quality and quantity angling opportunities. Mystery has a well cut trail, but a triple portage and is definitely not encouraged for anyone that is not in good health. 1 boat and motor at this location - 2 guests per day.

Wicked Lake - OUR CONSERVATION POLICY on this lake is entirely " Catch & Release".
  • Wicked Lake is accessed by double portage through Spot Lake. A high demand lake because of it's World Class Fishing. The number of quality fish that can be caught on this lake in a day is staggering. As it's name indicated . . it is totally wicked fishing on a good day. Well cut portage trail from Spot Lake but a double and not encouraged for anyone that is not in good health. 2 boats and motors at this location - 4 guests per day.

William Lake - OUR CONSERVATION POLICY on this lake is entirely " Catch & Release".
  • A Big Fish Lake - No large numbers are caught - usually only a couple of really nice fish are caught in a day - a lake for the trophy fisherman. Patience must be a virtue for this lake. A fun lake for big fish - Walleyes and Northern Pike. Travel time -35 minutes by boat from the main lodge. A very short portage trip. 1 boat and motor at this location - 2 guests per day.  A small lake that is long and narrow with water depths up to 85 ft.

Snakeweed Lake - CONSERVATION POLICY in effect on this lake - same as on main lake system - the release of all Walleyes over 18" and the release of all Northern Pike over 27".
  • A favorite and high demand lake with quality fishing for Walleyes & Northern Pike - The fishing here is totally unbelievable at time. The number of fish caught can be astonishing and it is an easy portage - - a  5 minute drive by vehicle to the landing spot. 2 boats and motors at this location - 4 guests per day.  A good size lake with two water falls/rapids, one coming in and one going out.

We reserve the right to change our conservation policies on these lakes at any time.
