OUR PREVIOUS  Canada fishing resort news

Our 25th Year as owners of Canada North Lodge! ! !    1978 thru 2002

How time does fly when you are having a good time. As we get ready to celebrate our 26th year, it seems as if it was just yesterday when we arrived as owners of Canada North Lodge. Our children were young Pat 12, Cathy 10, and Tim 8. Now they are grown and living their own lives, none of whom stayed with CNL, darn it!!! As far as Julie and I are concerned, it has been quite an adventure and experience. We can honestly say we have never had time to be bored. We have had our good times and bad times, but overall there are no regrets. We still have a hard time deciding where we actually live & never have become used to going through the emotional effects of leaving and arriving at both locations. We have been privileged to meet so many wonderful people in this business & have made so many friends both in. Our years at the lodge have been blessed with good health, and a lot of good luck in being able to get everything accomplished that we set out to do 25 years ago.

There are many persons that tell us . . you are one of a few . . there are not many 25 year owners. Julie and I often look at each other at this point and wonder whether we are odd, crazy, or lucky. The truth is we feel fortunate. For a large part, the many wonderful guests who have been at Canada North Lodge have made it all worthwhile. Over the years the many varied stories and memories will live with us forever. As we enter into our 26th year we look forward to seeing new and old guests, and adding stories and memories to our album as owners of CNL.

A Tribute to our Staff:

Lastly, we do not want to forget the wonderful staff that we have had for the 25 years we have owned the lodge. Their dedication to their job, friendly attitudes, hard work, and companionship has been a big part of our success story. They are unique in the fact that they are on the job for 24hrs a day, for months on end. It is not just a matter of going to work and coming home. They live, work, and have fun together, getting along with each other is a must. Our hats are off to them. Thank You, Staff, for your help in making Canada North Lodge what it is today.

Looking Back to 2002

2002 Definitely A Great Year for Fishing

Just when you think it cannot get much better you find yourself amazed at how much better the fishing continues to get. The fishing at Canada North Lodge during 2002 was without doubt the very best year I can remember. The fishing opened in May with unbelievable fishing and stayed that way throughout the fishing season. There were few if any slow periods, not even during the mayfly hatch, which is very unusual.

The weather was about as nice as anyone could ask for when it comes to fishing. Comfortable temperature days with a light wind seemed to dominate most the year. Rain came and went for the most part without any lengthy bad weather periods.

We had a few of those dreaded picture pretty days with clear skies, no wind and hot temperatures. As fishermen know, these days are good for taking pictures, swimming, and sun bathing but are not conducive to good fishing.

The number of walleyes and northern pike being caught each day was equally astonishing, several parties reported catching over 100 fish per boat in a day. Our fishery has plenty of fish in all year classes.

John Richmond and son Brian caught 139 fish in one day – with the largest percentage being over the size limit. They caught 5 northern pike over 40 inches, many large walleyes and several trophy smallmouth bass. The two of them were virtually floating on cloud nine when they arrived back at the lodge. They were so impressed they had hats made with the 5/40 club imprinted.

The many comments from the guests about the good fishing and how well our conservation policies were working is a very positive sign. Comments such as, why should we fly out when the fishing is as good or better right here, says a lot about our fishing.

We have dedicated a lot of effort over the years to our conservation policies, and thanks to our guest's cooperation these policies have had a big impact toward keeping and making our fishing among the best to be found in NW Ontario

The 2002 List of Big Fish “Caught & Released”

Each year our guides record fish that are over the size limit and are released. We post a listing with the guests name and the size of the fish in the lodge and update this list as the fish are caught.

The list this year was amazing – we virtually ran out of wall space for posting. I also know that many of the fish caught are not listed by the guides on the days when their guests catch many released fish.  So this listing is actually quite larger than what is posted. We believe that almost all the really big fish get recorded and feel that part of the list is close to being accurate. But the listing of walleyes from the 18” thru 25” and northern pike from 28’ thru 34” is far short of the true number. We believe the guides acquire a lazy arm and writer cramps.

The Stats from the 2002 listing:

·         A total of 2396 fish were listed

·         1839 walleyes over 18”

·         411 northern pike over 28”

·         41 northern pike 40” to 45”

·         67 northern pike 35” to 40”

·         189 northern pike 30” to 35”

·         71 walleyes 27” to 32.5” – 7# to 12# class

·         168 walleyes 24.5” to 27” – 5# to 7# class

·         248 walleyes 23” to 24.5” – 4# to 5# class

·         492 walleyes 21” to 23” – 3# to 4# class

·         862 walleyes 18” to 21” – 2# to 3# class

We consider these stats as remarkable and that the chances of catching big fish while at Canada North Lodge are excellent. Especially when you add the number of fish not listed and all the stories about the large fish that are hooked not landed.

Our dream of having a trophy fishery has become a reality. The future of fishing at Canada North Lodge can be described as fantastic. It is with pride that I can look anyone in the eye and honestly say, “At Canada North Lodge the fishing is excellent”.

2002 – Another Great Year – Thanks

Despite the fears in tourism caused by 9/11 and the slowdown in the economy we had another fantastic year. Our Thank you is extended to all our new and old guests during 2002 for making our 25th year such a success.  We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Looking Forward to 2003

Phone and E-mail Changes

Due to the large number of Dish Network calls we receive each month on both our 800 number we have been forced for sanity reasons to change our 800-331-FISH number we have had for 20 years. Last summer our Canada 800-363-FISH2 started having the same problems so it has been changed as well, please make note of the following new toll free numbers for Canada North Lodge.

Winter 800 – 1-222-3234 Nov 1st to May 1st.

Summer 800 – 1-222-3234 May 1st to Nov 1st

We have retained our same e-mail address for over 7 years and it has been changed due to the large number of junk mail each day. It had also came to our attention that our address was being used and spoofed by others (mail being received by others not sent by us).

Our new e-mail address is getinfo@canada-north.com

2002 Fish Tag Contest – Winner Drawn

2002’s Annual Fish Tag Contest allowed all guests who caught a tagged fish to enter their name into a drawing for a One (1) person free fishing trip in 2003. It is our pleasure to announce the winner of the 2003 Plan 1-3 day fishing trip.

The winner is Becky Walenciak. Becky is from Coweta, OK and has been notified by phone. 2002 was Becky’s first trip to Canada North Lodge. The winning tag was a 19.25 walleye that was tagged and released by myself on June 27th, 1997 just a few feet from our dock. Becky caught the fish on Loon Lake, about 5 miles from its release point on Little Bear and the walleye had grown 5 inches since release. Congratulations Becky, we are looking forward to seeing you again next summer.

The Conservation Fishing Policy at CNL

During 1989, The Lodge Owners for Wilderness Preservation initiated a Fishing Conservation Policy. Our goal was to release the larger breeding size fish, while allowing take home limits of quality size fillets. This program promotes natural reproduction and development of a trophy class fishery.

Year 2003 - 14 years later, and the program is a success story. It has been proven that the secret to sustained good fishing is the number of breeding fish available for reproduction each year. The larger the number of breeding fish the more fish you are going to have. Protecting the large fish promotes just such a condition.  Our lakes are proof that these methods work.

The policies that are in effect on our lakes are as follow:

  • Live Release of all Walleye over 18"

  • Live Release of all Northern over 27"

  • Live Release of all Lake Trout over 25” – 22” after Sept 1.

  • Catch & Release of all Smallmouth Bass.

  • All Large Fish are Released, trophy mounts are reproduced with replica mounts and are far superior to skin mounts.

  • Designated portage lakes as "Sport Fishing Only." The lakes were selected because of their good fishing, lake size being small, & demand for fishing the lake.

  • Conservation Licenses are included in all our Plans, our appreciation for your participation in "Catch & Release".

·         Encourage the use of barbless hooks on crank baits, spinner baits, and other lures not designed to hold bait. The barbs can be pinched down or removed. Barbed single hook jigs and bait rigs used for live bait will be allowed. However, if swallowed, we will encourage cutting the line and leaving the lure in place. It will dissolve naturally.

·         Practice proper handling techniques of fish for release.

Our goal is to provide each guest with an exceptional fishing trip that they will remember for years to come. As it has often been said, “memories are made of things like this”.

Water  . .  Water . . Water - We have safe water.

Everyone has heard and read media coverage about problems with water and water supplies. One of the most frequently asked questions is where do we obtain our water and is it safe to drink.

Yes, we have an approved water treatment system that delivers safe drinking water to every water tap  in every cabin and the lodge. The water system includes a couple of large water storage tanks, a chlorination system and three large filtration systems. The final filters are absolute filters, which remove everything, including Giardia and Crypto. The result is completely safe drinking water. Inside the lodge itself we even go one step farther, we remove all the chlorine, providing excellent water for our dining room coffee and drinks, and a place for our guests to refill their water bottles for the day. Plenty of pure, good tasting water.

But, there is always a downside to everything. The filters must be changed periodically and the largest problem is that we never know when the flow rates are going to decrease because the filters need changed. Occasionally this happens during peak water demand and we then have no choice except to shut down the water and change the filters. Sure hope it wasn’t you in the shower!!! If you are, just wait a couple of minutes and the water will be running again. The maintenance is a very small price to pay for ensuring safe water.

Summer / Fall Bear Hunting Season.

The Ontario Bear Hunting season now opens on August 15th of each year. We have found that the August dates present our hunters with excellent bear hunting which is as good or better than the past spring hunt. Some positive points and reasons to consider this summer/fall hunt are:

Ø       Assurance that the bears are active. With the spring hunt you always had to anticipate a late winter, which did not always lend toward getting the baits real active in time for the hunters arrival. Summer time and August is the period in which the bears are very active in their search for food.

Ø       The weather is much warmer, not nearly as rainy, definitely much more stable and reliable. Definitely more enjoyable.

Ø       The bug population is considerably less compared to spring.

Ø       Our kill ratio is higher than our previous spring hunt.

We encourage hunters that are looking for a good bear hunt to give this hunt a try. I believe you will agree with us that it is as good  or better than the springtime. We consider the time period between August 15th and Sept 8th to be the prime time for a successful hunt. Our bear population is excellent.

Summer/Fall Bear Hunt    Aug. 15th – Sept. 15th

Telephone – A Real Problem – An Explanation

Last year we announced that at last we had a pay phone for the guests and another line for business. But we soon discovered that this new system was unable to receive data transmissions such as fax, Internet, and e-mail. This forced us to make a decision between the new and old system. Naturally as a business today you cannot exist without fax, Internet and e-mail and we reverted back to the old radio system with a single line.

Our telephone system is just not a simple matter of calling the telephone company and asking for another line. We are on a phone system to Ear Falls that requires radio frequencies controlled by Canadian Communications. Because of all the remote locations in Ontario and the demand for radio- telephones there is a shortage of frequencies. As a result it is extremely hard to get another line. We have requested another frequency and as soon as one is available we will be able to have the pay phone, voice phone, and combination voice/data line.

Until this frequency becomes available we must use the old system that allow all connections but presents the same problems; one line - and not enough time for guests, business, staff, data, etc. Not a good thing but that is reality. Believe it or not, we can go to the moon, mars, and the HUBBLE telescope can take pictures of the universe but we cannot get additional frequencies and reliable phone service in remote locations. Sounds to me like “Flash Gordon” should concentrate on Earth for a change, the heck with the universe.

Bell believes there may be frequencies available this year. Don’t hold your breath but we are first in line when one becomes available and then our phone problems will be solved. In the meantime all I can ask is that our guests use the phone as infrequently as possible and abide by our five minute limit.

Minnows/Bait not included in packages:

Over the past couple of years several guests indicated that they believed that bait/minnows were included in our packages. We naturally do not like any misunderstandings especially at the end of an enjoyable trip when it comes time to pay the invoice.

Minnows, taxes, tackle, souvenirs, and store items have never been included in our packages. Our policy on the inclusive packages is to include as much as possible but we also want to be fair to everyone. Any item that will not be used by everyone equally is not included. In the case of minnows, some of our guests use a large number each day, some use few, and some use none. For this reason minnows are left outside of the plan as a separate purchase based on the number of minnows used.

2002 “Tagged Fish Contest”

During 2002 our guests can participate in the “Tagged Fish Contest”. These rules are required to qualify:

·         Record & submit the tag #, specie, total & forked length

·         Fisherman must be a registered guest of CNL.

·         The tagged fish must be live released with tag attached.

·         Submit location where the fish was caught.

·         Our guides are not eligible; the fish must be guest caught.

·         One entry per guest/per tag #.

·         A guest can submit different tag #’s

Winners prize - Plan 1, 3-day  trip for (1) person.

Bear Hunting & Moose Hunting Information:

Our brochure does not provide ample space to address all the aspects and features of these hunts. For complete information on these hunts please call 222-3234, we prefer to discuss these hunts personally with you in order to answer all your questions properly. You can get immediate full information at our web site http://www.canada-north.com/hunting.htm

Trip Payment – Cash, Checks or Credit Cards

Cash or checks is our preferred method of payment

As a convenience and courtesy to our guests we accept Visa and MasterCard. We are now able to accept your credit cards in US funds without having to convert the amounts to Canadian Funds as we are allowed as a Canadian Merchant to have a Merchant Account for Visa and MasterCard with a US Bank. This is especially good news as the previous method was time consuming, confusing to our guests and often led to final charges being higher than the original amount.

Propane Cooking Stoves at Shore Lunch Sites

As owners of CNL for the past 23 years, we have always known that forest fires present a very dangerous threat to our lake system, surrounding forests, and our business. The threat of forest fires is always in the back of our minds and we live in fear of their happening. It has always been known that forest fires are often started with “shore lunch fires.

“Propane cooking stoves” are in place at all shore lunch sites. We no longer allow open wood fires in any form. . guest or guide built . . the risk is not worth it.

Woman Lake Outpost

Due to lack of space in our color brochure little is mentioned about our Woman Lake Outpost Plan #4. The Woman Lake Outpost is located 15 miles north of our main lodge on a scenic point on Little Woman Lake and is accessible only by water. Little Woman Lake provides our guests with excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike and lake trout. To the north of the outpost is Big Woman Lake to the south is Big Bear and Middle Lake, all within 10 miles of the outpost.

The outpost has been completely remodeled, inside and out, is a very clean modern accommodation. Included are: kitchen cabinets, sink, thermostatically controlled propane heat, hot and cold running water, solar electric for interior lights, propane refrigerator, propane cooking stove w/oven, a bathroom with shower and vanity, cooking & eating utensils, and bunks with foam mattresses. You need to bring your own food, towels, personal items and bedroll.

Included are two 16’ boats with new Johnson 25hp motors and gas for the week. The boats are kept at the lodge for your pickup and are very clean, dry, well maintained and comfortably fish 3 persons. The boats are complete with swivel seats, depth finders, paddles, life cushions, landing net and minnow bucket. Your trip to the outpost will be assisted by one of our guides. The return trip is not assisted.

The outpost is booked for 4 to 6 persons on a Saturday to Saturday basis, a full 7-day trip, or any portion thereof. Other options available include guide service, additional boats, and evening meals booked at the main lodge. If you are looking for a housekeeping plan where you can do it yourself, have good fishing, and be in an isolated area, this is your chance.

Canada North Lodge Newsletter

55th Anniversary  - 2002 Winter/Spring Edition

Our 25th Year as owners of Canada North Lodge! ! !    1978 thru 2001

How time does fly when you are having a good time. As we get ready to celebrate our 25th year, it seems as if it was just yesterday when we arrived as owners of Canada North Lodge. Our years at the lodge have been blessed with good health, and a lot of good luck in being able to get everything accomplished that we set out to do 24 years ago.

As we enter into our 25th year we look forward to seeing new and old guests, and adding stories and memories to our album as owners of CNL.

A Tribute to our Staff:

Lastly, we do not want to forget the wonderful staff that we have had for the 24 years we have owned the lodge.

Looking Back to 2001

2001 Definitely A Great Year for Fishermen

Just when you think it cannot get much better you find yourself amazed at how much better it continues to get. The fishin' during 2001 was without doubt the very best year I can remember. It opened in May with unbelievable result and for the biggest part stayed that way thru September. There were few if any slow periods, not even during the mayfly hatch, which is very unusual.

The weather during 2001 was about as nice as anyone could ask for when it comes to fishing. Comfortable temperature days with a light wind seemed to dominate most the year. Rain came and went for the most part normally without any really long bad weather periods.

As always we had a few of those dreaded picture pretty days with clear skies, no wind and hot temperatures. As Fishermen know, these days are good for taking pictures, swimming, and sun basting but are usually not conducive to good fishing.

Our list of Big Fish “caught & released” was unbelievable and the number of smaller walleyes and northern pike being caught each day was equally astonishing, our fishery has plenty of fish in all year classes. The many comments from the guests about the good fishing and how well our conservation policies were working is a very positive sign. We have dedicated a lot of effort over the years to our conservation policies, and thanks to our guest's cooperation these policies have had a big impact toward keeping and making our fishing among the best to be found in NW Ontario.

Our dream of having a trophy fishery has become a reality. The future of our fishery can be described as secure and improving each year. It is with pride that I can look anyone in the eye and honestly say, “At CNL the fishing is excellent”.

2001 At Last – Few Improvements:

Finally, 2001 was a year with few major improvements or building projects at CNL. We actually enjoyed this long overdue break. To tell you the truth, we were actually much to busy too

have done much of anything during the season anyway. It was a unique treat to be able to concentrate on getting the small odds and ends completed and simply doing the normal yearly maintenance items.

During October we did install a new floor with commercial tile in the kitchen. It was one of those projects that required a period of no guests as all the kitchen equipment had to be removed and installed after the floor was laid. The floor looks great and should last forever. A big job that I am happy to see finished.

Electrical System Update – New Generators

During early August we installed a new 120 KW generator to update our electrical requirements at the lodge. Our 85kw unit was having problems and our 60kw unit was having problems with keeping up with the demand. Both of these units gave us 15 years of good service. Another new 60kw unit will be installed at the start of next season to replace the older 60kw unit. This improvement will ensure plenty of dependable electrical power for years to come.

9/11

Everyone at CNL was shocked and amazed as we watched the terrible details unfold over the internet on September 11th. Our prayers go out to everyone who lost their loved ones in such a senseless attack on the US. We completely support the US armed forces and the world coalition in their efforts to bring these terrorists to justice and to bring an end to terrorism.

2001 – Another Great Year – Thanks

2001 was the best year we have ever had, thank you guests and staff for making such a successful year possible.

Julie Update

Julie and I both would like to thank everyone for their concern and prayers during the period that Julie was in the hospital during June and July last summer. We are happy to say that she is doing very well and the treatments were a complete success. A very special thank you goes out to Allan Holt whom was kind enough to give up a portion of his vacation time to fly her directly to St. Louis.

Johnson 3 cyl - 25HP motors for 2002

Our policy is to provide our guests with all new 25hp Johnson motors each year. These motors are super quiet, very easy to start, idle & troll exceptionally well, their performance and ease of operator handling is fantastic, breakdowns have been practically nil. Our guests love these engines.

2001 Fish Tag Contest – Winner Drawn

2001’s Fish Tag Contest allowed all guests who caught a tagged fish to enter their name into a drawing for a One (1) person free Plan 1 trip in 2002. It is our pleasure to announce the winner of this trip.

The winner is Joey Rose. Joey is from Lilburn, GA and has been notified by registered mail. Joey has been with his father on several vacation trips to CNL. Last year seems to have been his lucky year at the lodge as he also caught and released a 36” Lake Trout, the largest of the season. Congratulations Joey, I guess we will be seeing you again during 2002.

The Conservation Fishing Policy at CNL

During 1989, The Lodge Owners for Wilderness Preservation initiated a  Conservation Policy. Our goal was to release the larger breeding size fish, while allowing take home limits of quality size fillets. This program promotes natural reproduction and development of a trophy class fishery.

Year 2002 - 13 years later, and the program is a success story. It has been proven that the secret to sustained good angling is the number of breeding fish available for reproduction each year. The larger the number of breeding fish the more fish you are going to have. Protecting the large fish promotes just such a condition.  Our lakes are proof that these methods work.

Walleyes:  Our list of BIG FISH “caught & released” continues to grow with each passing year. Each year we see a dramatic improvement. From all reports, the number of smaller walleyes being caught each day was very encouraging. Our fishery has plenty of fish in all year classes, a great achievement. The many comments from the guests about the good fishing and how well our conservation policies were working is a very positive sign. Isn’t it a terrible thing to hear guests commenting about all the big fish they had to release? No, that is a very good thing!

Northern Pike: Our list of “BIG NORTHERN PIKE” caught and released is fabulous. More and more of our guests are catching these monsters during their trip. The sizes of the Northern Pike are increasing. The number of pike caught each day is increasing.  The missing year classes have been restored.  During 2000 a 45 inch Northern Pike – estimated weight 31.5 lbs. - caught and released – alive & well – awaiting the chance to try out another angler’s skill and tackle. You could be next!

The policies that are in effect on our lakes are as follow:

·        The policies that are in effect on our lakes are as follow:

·         Live Release of all Walleye over 18"

·         Live Release of all Northern over 27"

·         Live Release of all Lake Trout over 25” – 22” after Sept 1.

·         Catch & Release of all Smallmouth Bass.

·         All Large Fish are Released, trophy mounts are reproduced with replica mounts and are far superior to skin mounts.

·         Designated portage lakes as "Catch & Release  Only." The lakes were selected because of the excellent angling opportunities, lake size being small, & demand for using the lake.

·         Conservation Licenses are included in all our Plans, our appreciation for your participation in "Catch & Release".

·         Encourage the use of barb less hooks on all crank baits, spinner baits, and other lures not designed to hold bait. The barbs can be pinched down or removed. Barbed single hook jigs and bait rigs used for live bait will be allowed. However, if swallowed, we will encourage cutting the line and leaving the lure in place. It will dissolve naturally.

Our goal is to provide each guest with an exceptional trip that they will remember for years to come.

Life Jackets:

Canadian Coast Guard regulations require that you must have one approved life jacket on board for each occupant of the boat. The life jackets must fit the person and be readily available. Even though the law states that they do not have to be worn we encourage everyone that does not swim or feels uncomfortable on the water to wear the life jackets. This is very important in the case of children. Boat cushions are not legal for life saving purposes.

If you have your own life jacket, we encourage you to bring it with you. United States Coast Guard approved life jackets are legal if you own them. Any color is now acceptable provided it has the coast guard approved tag. We have ample life jackets to go around, but we have found that many guests prefer their own personal lifejacket. Bring it with you.

Trip Payment – Cash, Checks or Credit Cards

Cash or checks is our preferred method of payment

As a convenience and courtesy to our guests we accept Visa and MasterCard. Effective 2002 we will be able to accept your credit cards in US funds without having to convert the amounts to Canadian Funds. For the first time we will be allowed as a Canadian Merchant to have a Merchant Account for Visa and MasterCard with a US Bank.

54th Anniversary - 2000 Fall/Winter Edition

Our 23rd Year as owners of CNL! ! ! 1978 thru 2000

How time does fly when you are having a good time. It seems as if it was just yesterday when we arrived. Our children were young Pat 12, Cathy 10, and Tim 8. Now they are grown and living their own lives, none of whom stayed with the lodge, darn it!!! We have been privileged to meet so many wonderful people in this business & have made so many friends. Our years at the lodge have been blessed with good health, and a lot of good luck in being able to get everything accomplished that we set out to do 23 years ago.

There are many persons that tell us . . you are one of a few . . there are not many 20 year owners. Julie and I often look at each other at this point and wonder whether we are odd, crazy, or lucky. The truth is we feel fortunate. For a large part, the many wonderful guests who have been at CNL  have made it all worthwhile. Over the years the many varied stories and memories will live with us forever. As we enter into our 24th year we look forward to seeing new and old guests, and adding stories and memories to our album as owners of CNL.

A Tribute to our Staff

Lastly, we do not want to forget the wonderful staff that we have had over our 23 years. Thank You, Staff, for your help in making CNL what it is today. We often get requests from our past guests about the staff, if you remember their name, we will try and pass on their address to you.

Looking Back to 2000

2000 A Great Year for Fishing

2000 was a wet cool year with very few bright quiet sunny days and plenty of cloudy days with just the right amount of wind. The number of really hot days could be counted on both hands. All these conditions contribute to excellent angling experiences but as we all know the first criteria is to have plenty of fish in all species and size categories and that is something we do have.

Our fishing on Woman River Chain of Lakes during 2000 can best be described as being superbly excellent to fabulous. By far, the best year that I can remember, it opened with a bang in May and stayed good all the way thru September. Our list of BIG FISH "caught & released" was unbelievable and the number of smaller walleyes and northern pike being caught each day was equally astonishing. Our fishery has plenty of fish in all year classes, a great achievement. The many comments from the guests about the good fishing and how well our conservation policies were working is a very positive sign. During 2000 there were few if any slow periods, not even during the mayfly hatch, which is very unusual. We have dedicated a lot of effort to our conservation policies, and thanks to our guest's cooperation these policies are having a big impact toward keeping and making our fishery among the best to be found in NW Ontario. Our dream of having a trophy fishery has become a reality. The future of the fishery can be described as secure and improving each year. It is with pride that I can look anyone in the eye and honestly say, "Our fishing is excellent".

2000 Improvements:

We are committed to offering our guests the best possible accommodations and service available in Northwestern Ontario. In our pursuit to make our facility one of the finest, each year we have made major improvements and dedicate a portion of this newsletter to the planned or completed projects.

New Cabin: The new cabin consists of 3 units, each accommodating 3 guests. Unlike our other cabins we decided upon using a cathedral ceiling with 6’ sliding glass entrance doors, & ceiling fans. The cabins feature thermostatically controlled electric heat, wall/wall carpeting, 4 piece bath tub/shower/vanity/stool, table & chairs, and single beds. The units are for families or parties of 3, 6, or 9 persons in the party.

Cabin Decks and Boardwalks: With the completion of the new cabin we were able to complete construction of the boardwalks and decks, which provides interconnecting access from cabin to cabin and to the lodge from several directions. Patio chairs were added to each cabin offering a great place to sit and socialize after a day of catching all those fish.

11 Cabins Remodeled: Yes time really does fly, seems like just yesterday when some of the cabins were built and others remodeled. Upon looking back however it is easy to discover that 10 to 15 years has passed and is time for a refresh and remodel.

Well, last fall that is exactly what happened. Eleven cabins got a complete interior remodeling. The project was long and was finally completed in early November. The project left one very tired but happy lodge owner and 11 remodeled cabins that look like new. The improvements include the following.

On the cabins facing the lake we removed the entrance door and added a 6’ sliding glass door facing the lake.

On the cabins that did not face the lake we installed insulated doors with built in opening glass with screens and added an additional window in some for better ventilation.

New carpeting installed in each unit.

Beautiful T&G pine siding was installed on most of the interior walls. A nice rustic touch to match the Ontario outdoors.

New ceilings installed and cabins without ceiling insulation were insulated before installing the new ceilings.

Each remodeled cabin has a ceiling fan installed.

Bathrooms were remodeled to include, new fixtures, bath fans, T&G pine siding, and new carpeting.

Recessed fluorescent lighting was installed in most cabins. On others additional interior lighting was added to the ceiling fans.

Our intent was to make the cabins as comfortable, modern and up to date as possible and to fashion them as closely as possible to the new cabin which all guests love. We feel we accomplished this objective and believe everyone will enjoy the changes. From the exterior the change definitely adds a new dimension and look.

Water . . Water . . Water - We have safe water.

Everyone has heard and read media coverage about problems with water and water supplies. One of the most frequently asked questions is where do we obtain our water and is it safe to drink.

Yes, we have a treated water system that delivers safe drinking water to every cabin and the lodge. The water system includes a couple of large water storage tanks, a chlorination system and three large filtration systems. The final filters are absolute filters, which remove everything, including Giardia and Crypto. The result is completely safe drinking water at CNL. Inside the lodge itself we even go one step farther, we remove all the chlorine. Provides excellent water for our dining rooms coffee and drinks, and a place for our guests to refill their water bottles for the day.

  • Assurance that the bears are active. With the spring hunt you always had to anticipate a late winter, which did not always lend toward getting the baits real active in time for the hunters arrival. Summer time and August is the period in which the bears are very active in their search for food.

  • The weather is much warmer, not nearly as rainy, definitely much more stable and reliable. Definitely more enjoyable.

  • The bug population is considerably less compared to spring.

  • Our kill ratio is higher than the old spring hunt.

  • We encourage anyone that is looking for a good bear hunt to give this hunt a try. I think you will find that you will love it and agree with us that it is as good or better than the springtime. We consider the time period between August 15th-Sept 8th to be the best time for a successful hunt. Our bear population is excellent.

Sounds to me like "Flash Gordon" should concentrate on Earth for a change, the heck with the universe.

Bell believes there may be frequencies available this year. Don’t hold your breath but we are first in line when one becomes available and then our phone problems will be solved. In the meantime all I can ask is that our guests use the phone as infrequently as possible and abide by our five minute limit.

Life Jackets:

Canadian Coast Guard regulations require that everyone must have an approved life jacket on board for each occupant of the boat. The life jackets must fit the person and must be readily available. Even though the law states that they do not have to be worn we encourage everyone that does not swim or feels uncomfortable on the water to wear the life jackets. This is very important in the case of children. Boat cushions are no longer considered legal for life saving purposes.

Confidence and Guide Service

Confidence in a one of your own known hot spots makes it easy for an angler to hold out, but it's difficult to have confidence when you don’t know a lake or only fish a lake a few days every year. The use of a knowledgeable and experienced guide can greatly increase confidence and improve your odds of success. The term "guide" gets thrown around quite loosely at times and most of us have either experienced a terrible guided day or at least have heard stories. It is understandable why some of our new guests arrive with more than a healthy bit of skepticism for the quality of the guide staff.

Doubts quickly disappear when guests realize that our guides are experienced, work together as a team and are on the water almost every day of the season looking for new patterns, presentations and locations.

The cumulative experience and knowledge of the guide staff is another tool that consistently successful anglers use to improve their odds. The guides know where all of the good spots and where the big ones were caught that season and the seasons before. Area’s that attract trophy class fish at a specific time of year tend to draw big fish every year. Confidence based on the guide's knowledge and experience keeps anglers attention focused on  good spots even when volume is down.

Confidence in their abilities are further reaching than just catching fish, they are unmatched when it comes to knowing the shore lunch spots and preparing a delicious meal of freshly caught fish. Their ability to navigate the lake chain and knowledge of hazard spots will be appreciated, not to mention their skills when it comes to filleting your fish.

Looking Forward to 2001

2000 – Another Great Year – Thanks

2000 was another big success and one of the best years we have ever had at CNL. Last year I promised myself that I make sure and find a little more time for my own fishing, and I did find the time for 3 full days with my family.  I still feel the need for more angling time and will work on that. I know the chances are slim but I can look forward to those days.

Thank You 2000 guests and past guests for making our lodge the success that it is. We’re looking forward to 2001 our 24th year and hope you will be able to join us for your vacation, if unable to make the trip at least drop us a note and stay in touch. We appreciate hearing from you.

2001 Johnson 3cyl - 25HP motors for 2001

Our policy is to provide our guests with all new 25hp Johnson motors each year. These motors are super quiet, very easy to start, idle & troll exceptionally well, their performance and ease of operator handling is fantastic, breakdowns have been practically nil. Our guests love these engines.

2000 Fish Tag Contest – Winner Drawn

2000’s Fish Tag Contest allowed all guests who caught a tagged fish to enter their name into a drawing for a free trip in 2001. It is our pleasure to announce the winner of the complimentary 2001 Plan 1-3 day trip to CNL. The winner is Jeff Martin.  Jeff is from Naperville, IL and has been notified by registered mail. 2000 was Jeff’s first year at CNL. Jeff, we congratulate you on winning the free trip and we are looking forward to seeing you in 2001.

Year 2001 - 12 years later, and the program is a success story.

2000’s list was considerably larger than 1999’s. Each year we see a dramatic improvement. From all reports, the number of smaller walleyes being caught each day was very encouraging. It now appears that our fishery has plenty of fish in all year classes, a great achievement. The many positive comments from the guests about the fishery and how well our conservation policies were working is a very positive sign.

During 2000 a 48 inch Northern Pike – estimated weight 31.5 lbs. - caught and released – alive & well – awaiting the chance to try out another angler’s skill and tackle. You could be next!

The policies that are in effect on our lakes are as follow:

  •       Live Release of all Walleye over 18"

  •       Live Release of all Northern over 27"

  •       Live Release of all Lake Trout over 25” – 22” after Sept 1.

  •       Catch & Release of all Smallmouth Bass.

  •       All Large Fish are Released, trophy mounts are reproduced with replica mounts and are far superior to skin mounts.

  •       Designated portage lakes as "Sport Fishing Only." The lakes were selected because of their good angling, lake size being small, & demand.

  •       Conservation Licenses are included in all our Plans, our appreciation for your participation in "Catch & Release".

  •         Encourage the use of barb less hooks on all crank baits, spinner baits, and other lures not designed to hold bait. The barbs can be pinched down or removed. Barbed single hook jigs and bait rigs used for live bait will be allowed. However, if swallowed, we will encourage cutting the line and leaving the lure in place. It will dissolve naturally.

  •         Practice proper handling techniques of fish for release.

Our goal is to provide each guest with an exceptional  trip that they will remember for years to come. As it has often been said, “memories are made of things like this”.

Trip Payment – Cash or Checks vs. Credit Cards

As a convenience and courtesy to our guests we accept Visa, Master Card, and American Express.

Being as our bank is in Ontario and our credit card merchant accounts are in Ontario we must convert credit card charges from US to Canadian Funds when accepting a guest credit card for payment.

Each day we call the credit card company and obtain the allowed daily exchange rate to be used in converting US to Canadian funds for charges to a guest credit card and we are bound by our Merchant Card Agreement not to charge any extra percentages above the current rate.

Once this is done we feel we have done our part but we also know that is not the end of the story for your charges.  In the process of forwarding your card charges back to your bank or Credit Card Company for charges to your monthly statement they go through another exchange rate conversion back to US funds. If this exchange rate is higher or lower than when we made the charge there will be a difference in your expected charges to your account.

During the last couple of years we have received calls from some guests inquiring as to why their final US credit card charges were higher than their final invoice at CNL. The daily exchange rate and the buying/selling of foreign funds and conversion by the banks is the only reason we can give. Needless to say, not all have been content with our explanation. We are not happy about our guest enjoyable trip to CNL being jeopardized by accepting their credit card.

As most of you realize this courtesy of accepting credit cards costs us a percentage of the charges which we readily accept as part of doing business. But we not do like being blamed or accused of charging the wrong exchange amount or of taking advantage of a guest that uses their credit card. Over our years in business we have been very proud of the fact that we follow a strict & honest code when it comes to abiding by the fair exchange rate.

We came close to deciding that we would not accept credit cards for anything except deposits. But finally concluded that we would continue accepting them but would make everyone aware that their final charges on their credit card statement may be higher than their intended charges due to the explanation above.

We encourage everyone who is not comfortable with this explanation or do not want to chance it happening to use cash, personal checks, or travel checks for payment of their trip.

After all CASH or CHECK is the method we prefer.

Propane Cooking Stoves at Shore Lunch Sites

As owners for the past 23 years, we have always known that forest fires present a very dangerous threat to our lake system, surrounding forests, and our business.

Little Woman Lake provides our guests with excellent angling for walleye, northern pike and lake trout.

The outpost is booked for 4 to 6 persons on a Saturday to Saturday basis, a full 7-day fishing trip, or any portion thereof. Other options available include guide service, additional boats, and evening meals booked at the main lodge. If you are looking for a housekeeping plan where you can do it yourself, have good angling, and be in an isolated area, this is your chance.

Our Fall 1999 Newsletter

Canada North Lodge

2000 Newsletter

53rd Anniversary - 1999 Fall/Winter Edition

Our 22nd Year as owners of CNL! ! ! 1978 thru 1999

How time does fly when you are having a good time. It seems as if it was just yesterday when we arrived as owners of Canada North Lodge. Our children were young; Pat 12, Cathy 10, and Tim 8. Now they are grown and living their own lives, non of whom stayed with Canada North Lodge, darn it!!! As far as Julie and I are concerned, it has been quite an adventure and experience. We can honestly say, we have never had time to be bored. We have had our good times and bad times, but overall there are no regrets. We still have a hard time deciding where we actually live & never have become used to going through the emotional effects of leaving and arriving at both locations. We have been privileged to meet so many wonderful people in this business & have made so many friends both in Canada and the US. Our years at the lodge have been blessed with good health, and a lot of good luck in being able to get everything accomplished that we set out to do 22 years ago.

There are many persons that tell us . . you are one of a few . . there are not many 23 year owners. Julie and I often look at each other at this point and wonder whether we are odd, crazy, or lucky. The truth is we feel fortunate. For a large part, the many wonderful guests who have been at Canada North Lodge has made it all worth while. Over the years the many varied stories and memories will live with us forever. As we enter into our 23rd year we look forward to seeing new and old guests, and adding stories and memories to our album as owners of CNL.

A Tribute to the Staff of Canada North Lodge

Lastly, we do not want to forget the wonderful staff that we have had for the 20 years we have owned Canada North Lodge. Thank You Staff for your help in making Canada North Lodge what it is today. We often get requests from our past guests about the staff, if you remember their name, we will try and pass on their address to you.

Looking Back to 1999

1999 A Great Year for Fishing

Our fishing on the Woman River Chain of Lakes during 1999 can best be described as being superbly excellent. By far, the best fishing year that I can remember. Our list of BIG FISH "caught & released" was much larger. From all reports, the number of smaller walleyes being caught each day was very encouraging. It now appears that our fishery has plenty of fish in all year classes, a great achievement. The many comments from the guests about the good fishing and how well our conservation policies were working is a very positive sign. During 1999 there were few if any slow periods, not even during the mayfly hatch, which is very unusual. It is with pride that I can look anyone in the eye and honestly say the fishing is good. We have dedicated a lot of effort to our conservation policies, and thanks to our guest's cooperation, these policies are having a big impact toward making our fishing among the best to be found in NW Ontario. In fact, our dream of having a trophy fishery has become a reality. The future of fishing at Canada North Lodge can be looked upon as improving dramatically each year and will become the best. We must all continue to do our part.

New Cabin:

After much discussion, at the end of August we decided to build a new guest cabin and to get it under roof before we left. As it turned out we practically finished the 3 new units before leaving in November. All that remains to complete is some plumbing, carpeting, furniture, drapes, and railings on the boardwalks. This can be easily completed upon our return in the spring of 2000.

The new cabin consists of 3 units, each accommodating 3 guests. Unlike our other cabins we decided on using a cathedral ceiling with 6’ sliding glass entrance doors, & ceiling fans. The units feature thermostatically controlled electric heat, wall to wall carpeting, 4 piece baths – tub, shower, vanity and stool, table & chairs, single beds, The units are planned for use for families with a party of 3 –6 or 9.

Cabin Decks and Boardwalks:

With the completion of the new cabin we were able to complete construction on the boardwalks that were built last fall. The system allows easy access from cabin to cabin and to the lodge from several directions. This new boardwalk/deck system does work well and is constructed of all treated lumber that should last for at least 20 yrs.

In the spring of "1999" we treated the boardwalks with a sealer which gave the treated lumber a rich natural wood appearance.

In addition, we removed the old deck on the lodge and replaced it with a new treated deck with all new railings, a great place to socialize after a day of fishing.

1999 Improvements:

Our objective has always been to offer our guests the best possible accommodations and service. In our continuing drive to make CNL one of the finest lodge/resorts in the north, we have continually improved our accommodations during our 22 years as owners. We are committed to offering our guests the best, we pride ourselves in the fact that our resort is one of the finest that you will find anywhere. Each year we dedicate a portion of this newsletter to inform you of our planned and completed improvements.

New Docks

As they always say, the best laid plans of men and mice often go astray. Last fall we planned on building a new guest cabin in the spring of 99, but upon arrival we decided that it was much more important to replace the docking system. The new cabin was placed on hold.

Yes, we have a completely new dock that looks like a million dollars and our guests love it. Another major improvement completed. The new docking system is constructed entirely of treated lumber and will have a lifetime of over 20 years. Additional floatation material was added and the wood was treated with a sealer after completion. The result was a dock that will not gray with age and one which floats considerably higher than the original system.

The new floatation dock is 250 foot long and 8 foot wide, has 4’ wide slips capable of accommodating 30 plus boats, and plenty of room for 2 float planes.

The project went well and was completed in a reasonable time frame. A special Thank You to our guests for their cooperation and patience during this construction period.

Life Jackets:

Effective in 1999, Canadian Coast Guard regulations requires that everyone must have an approved life jacket on board for each occupant of the boat. The life jackets must fit the person and must be readily available. They do not have to be worn at all times. Boat cushions are no longer considered legal for life saving purposes.

If you have your own life jacket, we encourage you to bring it with you. United States Coast Guard approved life jackets are legal if you own them. Any color is now acceptable provided it fits the person and has the coast guard approved tag. We have ample life jackets to go around, but we have found that many guests prefer the jacket they are used to. Bring it with you.

Even though the law states that they do not have to be worn we encourage everyone that does not swim or feels uncomfortable on the water to wear the life jackets. This is very important in the case of children.

Fishing Regulation Changes:

Effective in 1999, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced the following changes to fish limits and size limits.

Walleye – Possession Limits – Opens 3rd Sat May
4 walleye possession limit - regular license
2 walleye possession limit -conservation lic

Northern Pike – Possession Limits – Open all year.
4 Northern possession limit –regular license
2 Northern possession limit – conservation lic

Lake Trout – Possession Limits – Jan 1 to Sept 3

2 Lake Trout possession limit – regular license

1 Lake Trout possession limit – conservation lic

Walleye – Size limit was changed to one walleye over 18"

Northern Pike – Remains one northern over 27.5"

Lake Trout – size limit changed to one over 22"

When it comes to size limits it really had no large impact upon our fishermen because our policy is to return all large fish over the legal size limit. We felt for a long time that walleyes as large as 19" were too big and were pleased with the regulation change. It has been proven that the secret to sustained good walleye fishing is the number of breeding fish available for reproduction each year. The larger the number the more fish you are going to have. Protecting the large walleyes promote just such a condition. Our chain of lakes is proof that these conservation methods work.

The limits have been 6 walleyes and 6 northern pike for as long as I can remember. Being as Ontario is very conservation minded the changes were made to ensure the continuance of an excellent fishery. Many think and ask if the regulation changes were initiated because the good fishing was on the downfall. No, changes were made to ensure that just such a thing would not happen.

How did our guests during 1999 respond? Most felt that it was a good decision and found little fault with the new regulations. As always a few still felt the changes were not necessary.

Being as CNL supports conservation fishing in a very big way, we were happy about the decision. Over 60% of our guests use the conservation license and promote "catch and release fishing." Shore lunches are the highlight of the trip and they enjoy eating some fish while at the lodge and are very content with not taking fish home. While we are talking about it Ontario is fair, in my opinion a conservation license should not allow any take home fish. Ontario allows 2 walleyes, 2 northern pike, and 1 lake trout as take home fish on the conservation license.

As I have always said, fishermen come to Ontario for good fishing. To them this is the most important qualification. The sport and action is what they are in pursuit of. Fishermen look forward to the thrill of catching big fish and lots of fish. You will never convince me that they come to Canada and spend their dollars just to take home a few fish. In those terms, the price per pound would be very high.

Summer/Fall Bear Hunting Season Extended.

In January 1999, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced the closing of our spring bear hunt. Attempts at having the spring hunt reinstated has been unsuccessful at this time, and in all fairness one can assume that the spring bear hunt will not be reinstated.

In early August the Ministry of Natural Resources announced a new season for bear hunting. The season now opens on August 15th of each year. We now call it our summer/fall bear hunt. During 1999 we found that hunting on August 15th worked out quite well and was very successful. All our baits were hit repeatedly and our hunters had a high success ratio. We ended the fall hunt with a 67% average.

We found that the August dates presented our hunters with as good of a chance or better than the spring hunt. One of the positive points of the summer hunt is that you are assured that the bears are active. With the spring hunt you always had to anticipate a late winter, which did not always lend toward getting the baits real active in time for the hunters arrival. Another plus to the summer hunt is that the weather is generally much warmer and not quite as rainy as it could be during the spring hunt. Another point that pleases hunters is the fact that the bugs are down and not nearly as bad as during the spring.

We encourage anyone that is looking for a good bear hunt to give this hunt a try. I think you will find that you will love it and agree with us that it is as good or better than the springtime. We consider the time period between August 15th-Sept 4th to be the best time for a successful hunt. Our bear population is excellent.                            Summer/Fall Bear Hunt Aug. 15th – Sept. 15th

Water. .Water. .Water-We have safe water.

The water is drawn into the camp and first chlorinated and stored in the storage tanks, from there it goes to a couple of 1 micron filters which remove most particles and then flows into two large filtration systems. Both contain seven large filters, the first being .35 micron filters and the final containing the absolute filters. These absolute filters remove everything including Giardia and Crypto. The net result is that every water tap delivers plenty of safe drinking water at Canada North Lodge. Inside the lodge itself we even go one step farther, the water flows through two filters that removes the chlorine itself. This makes for excellent drinking water, coffee, drinks etc. We are proud to be able to provide such a system for our guests and felt it important to stress that our water is as safe as you are going to find anywhere.

As they always say, there is a downside to everything. The downside of this system is that it requires maintenance. The filters must be changed periodically. The biggest problem being is that you never know when the flow rates are going to decrease because the filters need changed. Occasionally this happens during peak water demand times, we then have no choose except to shut down the water and change the filters. Sure hope it wasn’t you in the shower!!! If you are, just wait a couple of minutes the water will be running again. The maintenance is a very small price to pay for ensuring safe water.

Looking Forward to 2000

1999 – Another Great Year – Thanks

1999 was by far the best year we have ever had at Canada North Lodge. After last year I promised myself that I make sure and find a little more time for my own fishing. Well little did I know, instead of getting a day of fishing, I got several hours fishing time. HUM . . this is going to have to change. So much for lodge owners thinking they will be able to frequently fish their favorite fishing spots. A sincere Thank you to the 1999 guests for your patronage.  Minnows/Bait not included in packages:

Over the past couple of years several guests indicated that they believed that bait/minnows were included in our packages. We naturally do not like any misunderstandings especially at the end of an enjoyable trip when it comes time to pay the invoice. For that reason I thought it only appropriate to devote a little space to this subject.

Minnows, taxes, tackle, souvenirs, and store items have never been included in our packages. Upon checking our brochure rate sheet I discovered that the minnow statement was missing. The printer has been notified. But it is also fair to say that nowhere is there a mention that they are included in the package. We apologize for any misunderstanding this may have caused, as we are the last to want this to happen.

Our policy on the inclusive packages is to include as much as possible but we also want to be fair to everyone. Any item that will not be used by everyone equally is not included. In the case of minnows, some of our guests use a large number each day, some use few, and some use none. For this reason minnows are left outside of the plan as a separate purchase based on the number of minnows actually used each day.

This fall I spent a large amount of time putting together data on the use of minnows with the idea of including them into the plans. Naturally this made the package rates rise and cost more. But the bottom line was why should someone not using minnows pay for those that were. The end result was that we again threw the whole idea in the trash can. As far as I am concerned it is a dead subject.Minnows/Bait is not included. After all, after 22 years, why change now. If it isn’t broken don’t fix it.

May Dates **NEW**The May Special. Why?

Effective this spring we have a May Special. Pick any of the American Plans, excluding the outpost plan, and the 2000 rate will be reduced 10%. This discount is exclusive of any other discounts. Trip must reside entirely in May with your departure date prior to June 1st.

We are accepting reservations starting on May 15th. Opening of walleye season in 2000 is May 20th.

Many of you ask why MAY? During the past several years we have seen a decline in our bookings for the month of May. For what reasons we have no idea. The rest of the years bookings have been on an increase while May has dropped and naturally we want to build this fantastic fishing month back to where it used to be.

For that reason we are offering the 10% discount in hope of getting fishermen booking this extremely good month.

May offers good fishing and has been well known and respected by fishermen for excellent fishing. The weather can still be up and down, but for most this is not a problem. The walleyes are usually on spawn or just off the spawn, and the lake trout are on the surface. Take advantage of this offer. If you have any questions please give us a call 222-3234.

2000 Johnson 3cyl - 25HP motors for 2000

Our policy is to provide our guests with all new 25hp Johnson motors each year. We have been so happy with this new engine that all of our main lodge boats and outpost boats are equipped with the motor. These motors are super quiet, very easy to start, they idle & troll exceptionally well, their performance and ease of operator handling is fantastic, breakdowns have been practically nil. Our guests love these engines.

1999 Fish Tag Contest – Winner Drawn

1999’s Fish Tag Contest allowed all guests who caught a tagged fish to enter their name into a drawing for a free fishing trip in 2000. On the morning of November 30th the sealed container was opened by Julie and myself, another person drew one entry. It is our pleasure to announce the winner of the complimentary 2000 Plan 1-3 day trip to Canada North Lodge.

The winner is VERNE WALRAFEN. Verne is from Ozawkie, KS and has been notified by registered mail. 1999 was Verne’s first year at Canada North Lodge. Verne, we congratulate you on winning the free trip and we are looking forward to seeing you in 2000.

Year 2000 - 10 years later, and the program has proven successful. . It has been proven that the secret to sustained good fishing is the number of breeding fish available for reproduction each year. The larger the number of breeding fish the more fish you are going to have. Protecting the large fish promote just such a condition. Our chain of lakes is proof that these conservation methods work.

Walleyes: Our list of BIG FISH "caught & released" was much larger. From all reports, the number of smaller walleyes being caught each day was very encouraging. It now appears that our fishery has plenty of fish in all year classes, a great achievement. The many comments from the guests about the good fishing and how well our conservation policies were working is a very positive sign. Isn’t it a terrible thing to hear guests commenting about all the big fish they had to release? No, that is a very good thing!

Northern Pike: Our list of "BIG NORTHERNS" caught and released is fabulous. More and more of our guests are catching these monsters during their trip. The sizes of the Northern Pike are increasing. The number of pike caught each day is increasing. The missing year classes have been restored.                   (continued next column)

The Conservation Fishing Policy - Continued

  • The policies that are in effect on our lakes are as follow:
  • Live Release of all Walleye over 18"
  • Live Release of all Lake Trout over 22"
  • Live Release of all Northern over 27"
  • Catch & Release of all Smallmouth Bass.

All Large Fish are Released, trophy mounts are produced with replica mounts and are far superior to skin mounts.

Designated portage lakes as "Sport Fishing Only." The lakes were selected because of their good fishing, lake size being small, & demand for fishing the lake.

Conservation Licenses during 1998 are included in all our Plans. An incentive for participating in "Catch & Release".

  • Encourage the use of barbless hooks on crank baits, spinner baits, and other lures not designed to hold bait. The barbs can  be pinched down or removed. Barbed single hook jigs and bait rigs used for live bait will be allowed. However, if swallowed, we will encourage cutting the line and leaving lure in place. It will dissolve naturally.
  • Practice proper handling techniques of fish for release.

Our goal is to provide each guest with an exceptional fishing trip that they will remember for years to come. As it has often been said, "memories are made of things like this".

Bear Hunting & Moose Hunting

Our large brochure does not provide ample space to address all the aspects and features of these hunts. For complete information on these hunts please call 222-3234, we prefer to discuss these hunts personally with you in order to answer all your questions properly. We will also mail information on the hunt. Check out our home page.

Pay Phone has been installed at CNL

After waiting all year for the pay telephone to be installed, Bell Canada got the job done just before we closed the lodge. In the past we had only one line for business calls, fax, 800 incoming calls, guest calls, & staff calls. The line was busy all the time making it very difficult to run a business. With the installation of the pay phone our business line will be used only for our business purposes and the guests have a line for their use.

Guests can use the pay phone for both incoming and outgoing calls. The phone accepts all phone card and major credit cards. We will also have phone credit cards provided by Bell for sale.

2000 "Tagged Fish Contest"

During 2000 our guests can participate in the "Tagged Fish Contest". These rules are required to qualify:

The 2000 Drawing will be held on day of closing and drawn by one of our guides. Two witnesses will be present. The lucky guest will be notified before December 31, 1999. Winner’s name and address will appear in our fall-winter edition Newsletter.

Winners prize - our Plan 1, 3-day fishing trip for (1) person.

Propane Cooking Stoves/Shore Lunch Sites

As owners of Canada North Lodge for the past 22 years, we have always known that forest fires present a very dangerous threat to our lake system, surrounding forests, and our business.

The threat of forest fires is always in the back of our minds and we live in fear of their happening. It has always been known that forest fires are often started with "shore lunch fires.

"Propane cooking stoves" are in place at all shore lunch sites on our main lake chain and portage lakes. We no longer allow open wood fires in any form. . guest or guide built . . the risk is not worth it. We will strongly enforce this policy in the future. The advantages are many when one thinks about it for a minute.

  • The propane stoves cook much faster and can be controlled.

  • The end of fighting the smoke that burned the eyes.

  • The end of gathering firewood and if it is wet, well?

  • The risk of a forest fire is negligible.

  • The end of fighting Coleman Stoves under fire restrictions.

  • More fishing time, the time for shore lunch is reduced.

On the downside . . everyone loved . . including myself . . the cosmetics of the outdoor fire at shore lunch.

Times change . . things change . . but the change is worth it.

QUIP and THOUGHT - Y2K

Wonder if the fish will get the Y2K bug and forget what year it is? If that is the case they may not remember what lures look like and will hit everything you throw.

"Wishing Everyone. .The best of fishing in "2000"

Fall 1998 Edition

Canada North Lodge

1999 Newsletter

52nd Anniversary - 1998 Fall - Winter Edition

Our 21st Year ! ! ! 1978 thru 1998

Our years at the lodge have been blessed with good health, and a lot of good luck in being able to get everything accomplished that we set out to do 20 years ago.

There are many persons that tell us . . you are one of a few . . there are not many 20 year owners. Julie and I often look at each other at this point and wonder whether we are odd, crazy, or lucky. The truth is we feel fortunate. For a large part, the many wonderful guests who have been at Canada North Lodge has made it all worth while. Over the years the many varied stories and memories will live with us forever. As we enter into our 21st year we look forward to seeing new and old guests, and adding stories and memories

A Tribute to the Staff of Canada North Lodge

Lastly, we do not want to forget the wonderful staff that we have had for the 20 years we have owned Canada North Lodge. Thank You Staff for your help in making Canada North Lodge what it is today. We often get requests from our past guests about the staff, if you remember their name, we will try and pass on their address to you.

Looking Back to 1998

The Fishing During 1998
Our fishing on the Woman River Chain of Lakes during 1998 can best be described as being superbly excellent. By far, the best fishing year that I can remember. Our list of BIG FISH "caught & released" was much larger. From all reports, the number of smaller walleyes being caught each day was very encouraging. It now appears that our fishery has plenty of fish in all year classes, a great achievement. The many comments from the guests about the good fishing and how well our conservation policies were working was a very positive sign. During 1998 there were few if any slow periods, not even during the mayfly hatch, which is very unusual. It is with pride that I can look anyone in the eye and honestly say the fishing is good. We have dedicated a lot of effort to our conservation policies, and thanks to our guest's cooperation, these policies are having a big impact toward making our fishing among the best to be found in NW Ontario. In fact, our dream of having a trophy fishery is becoming a reality. The future of fishing at Canada North Lodge can be looked upon as improving dramatically and will become the best. We must all continue to do our part.1998 -

A Very Busy Year - Thanks
1998 was by far the best year we have ever had at Canada North Lodge. In fact, we were so busy that for the first time, I did not have the opportunity to catch even one walleye or northern. So much for lodge owners thinking they will be able to frequently fish their favorite fishing spots. But, I have already decided this must change in the future. Our sincere thanks to all our 1998 guests for their patronage and look forward to welcoming your return in the near future.

New Boats - An All-New Look!
In our continuing effort to offer our guests the best in equipment 6 new boats were purchased to replace a few remaining older boats. In the past we preordered the boats painted with our standard color blue. The new boats were shipped red in color. After looking at them for some time, the decision was made to paint our entire fleet of boats Red, a fresh new look.

Eve Troughs and Gutters on Lodge and Cabins
Oh yes, we cannot believe it either. After years of promising our guests that they would be installed, and then waiting for the past 3 years to get someone out to camp to install them, we finally succeeded. No more of those free showers from rain falling off the roofs. No more laugh's at someone getting drenched. It is a nice touch, makes the cabins and lodge look great and should reduce our maintenance of the decks and buildings. The water hitting the decks and landing on the siding caused many problems, the worst being the black ugly stains on the siding.

All the black spots on the siding have been removed. The buildings were treated in late August with a fresh coat of that wonderful Varathane Oil, giving the buildings a brand new look. All in all . . . another big improvement.

The Sunset Cabin. . Another Accomplishment

Twenty-one years have passed and our accommodations which has become known as the sunset cabin, because of the brilliant sunset every evening, has finally gotten the attention it has needed for some time. New log siding, deck and railings, and a new roof. Looks like a million dollars. It is the first thing our guests see when coming off the lake after a day of fishing. Will give excellent results for the pictures taken of Canada North Lodge from the lake at sunset or of an evening. Check out the changes at our home page http://www.canada-north.com

Two New Portage Lakes
We were issued boat caches on two new lakes by the MNR. Both are directly off of Spot Lake. Due to being extremely busy during the 1998-fishing season, little time remained to get the trail cut and the boats and motors moved. Finally, In August we struggled with the time necessary to get the job done. One lake was opened and named Wicked Lake. The other lake remains unnamed, the portage trail needs to be cut and boat and motor moved.

Wicked Lake has absolutely fantastic fishing and is set up on a catch and release basis only. No shore lunches are allowed. The lake is a double portage, from the main lake chain to Spot Lake, then a portage to Wicked Lake. The demand is anticipated to be high and we cannot possibly ensure nearly everyone a chance at the lake as we are allowed only one boat and motor on this lake by the MNR. We have applied for a second boat. Will have to see what happens. Handling this one fairly is going to be tough.

If everything happens like we anticipate the unnamed lake should be another big hit. It will also be a "catch and release" lake and is accessed by a third portage from Wicked Lake. It may be very well worth the effort, will have to wait and see how that lake and the fishing is - - will bet the fishing is fantastic.

New Boardwalks and Decks:
During late August we removed the old boardwalks, decks, and railings from every cabin and the lodge. For a while it looked like a bomb hit CNL. We then jacked up each cabin added another set of large (leveling/support) cross beams, and built new cribbing for the cabins to rest on. According to the experts, this should practically eliminate the cabin frost and shifting problem we encounter each year. Only time will prove, we will find out the value in the spring. A lot of hard work, if that has anything to do with it, it should work.

While jacking each cabin the crossbeams were selected so their total length would also support the new boardwalks, doing away with the need for deck support posts. The cabins were also jacked to a height that would allow us to level the boardwalk, as close as possible, from cabin to cabin.
Then the new boardwalk system was planned/laid out to allow for simpler system and ease of access from cabin to cabin and to the main lodge. At last it was time to go to work on the new boardwalks. The new boardwalks, railings and decks are constructed of treated lumber and should last forever, or so we hope. The new system added an impressive new look to the entire resort, and is a definite improvement over the original boardwalk system. We are confident that our guests will love it.

On October 16th, after 29000 board foot of lumber, 35000 nails, countless screws & bolts, and 2 months of labor; myself and 4 of our staff members completed the project and headed home with a sigh of relief and a big smile. A wonderful ending to another year at Canada North Lodge.

1998 Was Without Doubt . . . One to Remember

Looking Forward to 1999

1999 Johnson 3cyl -- 25HP motors for 1999
We have changed to the OMC lease program. New engines each year. We have been so happy with this new engine that all of our main lodge boats and outpost boats will be equipped with this new engine. These engines are super quiet, very easy to start, they idle & troll exceptionally well, their performance and ease of operator handling is fantastic, breakdowns have been practically nil. Our guests love these engines.

Projects Planned for the 1999 Season

When the spring of 1999 arrives, our new guests and returning guests will find many changes to Canada North Lodge. We are all but finished with the boardwalk and deck project and will be easily completed before the arrival of guests.

The decision has been made to convert a couple of the older guest cabins into accommodations for our female staff. They have been in need of nicer/modern conditions for years.

But, these guest cabins must be replaced; here we go again, more construction. As the picture indicates on the front page of this newsletter, the groundwork has started. We dug down to solid bedrock and leveled the pad using gravel. This will prevent any shifting due to frost. Upon our arrival in the spring the new cabin will be started. With luck, we hope to have the cabin finished in early June, in time for the season peak booking time. At this time we have several plans under consideration, we have made no decision upon the size of the cabin or the occupancy size. One thing we do know, all plans include a good view of the lake for the cabin's guests. The cabin is being built in a spot that will not interfere or block the lake view for the existing guest cabins. A very important criteria. The sewage line, water line, gas line, and electric service for the new cabin is in place. We have a good start and won't have to worry about the weather allowing us get this work done in the spring.

Last falls big project with the boardwalks and cabin work left some lawn spots in need of work in the spring. Topsoil will be needed in some spots, other spots will be landscaped and then grass seed will be planted. By mid June, we hope to have everything looking green. Don't take me wrong, it is nice now, but maintenance is needed for a final good look.

The CWF material for protecting the new decks and boardwalks has already been purchased, but weather and time ran out in the fall. This finishing touch will be done as soon as the warm weather arrives and will make another big change in the exterior appearance of the forever changing Canada North Lodge.

Lastly, I am afraid that it will be time to resurface and repair the entire dock. Time does fly. It seems like just yesterday when we built the new dock, but 12 years has passed. The standard rough cut decking will be replaced with treated lumber; hopefully it will last much longer than 11 years. This project can be done in stages throughout the year. The entire dock system will receive some additional flotation material.

1999 Sport Shows and Dates
We will be at the following shows in January 1999

  • Kansas City, Missouri - Bartle Hall ( Jan 5th - Jan 10th)
  • Tulsa, OK - State Fairgrounds  (Jan 26th - Jan 31st)

We are down to two - from 18. Due to changing conditions in the market place and in our lives, we are pursuing new avenues of marketing. Julie and I both have family responsibilities that curtail our traveling and away from home time. Plus these new avenues of marketing were impossible to pursue while being actively on the road for 3 months. As they say, times change. . and we are changing too. For our guests in shows we have canceled, you are not forgotten, you are important to us, always feel free to give us a call on our nickel. 217-259-6101

  • Practice proper handling techniques of fish for release.

To the north of the outpost is Big Woman Lake, to the south is Big Bear and Middle Lake, all within 10 miles of the outpost.

During 1998 the outpost was completely remodeled, inside and out, is a very clean modern accommodation.

At Last Another Phone Line at CNL

Good News for 1999, Bell Canada has agreed to install a pay phone system at Canada North Lodge. This will give us a second line of which will be used by our guests for their outgoing calls and for their families calling in.

In the past we had only one line for business calls, fax, 800 incoming calls, guest calls, & staff calls. The line was busy all the time making it very difficult to run a business. For guest calls we had to constantly remind them of a time limit which was not always accepted with a smile. With addition of the pay phone our business line will be used only for our business purposes. The pay phone can be will be used for guest incoming and outgoing calls, and without any time limit. All in all it will be another major improvement in the services at CNL.

Propane Cooking Stoves at Shore Lunch Sites

As owners of Canada North Lodge for the past 21 years, we have always known that forest fires present a very dangerous threat to our lake system, surrounding forests, and our business.

The threat of forest fires is always in the back of our minds and we live in fear of their happening. It has always been known that forest fires can be started with "shore lunch fires

We have for several years discussed the option of going to all propane cooking stoves at selected shore lunch spots. Starting in 1997 this became fact. We no longer allow open wood fires in any form. . guest built or guide built . . the risk is not worth it. We will strongly enforce this policy in the future.

In 1998 "propane cooking stoves" will be available at selected shore lunch sites on our main lake chain and portage lakes.
The advantages are many when one thinks about it for a minute.
· The propane stoves cook much faster and can be controlled.
· The end of turning away from the smoke that follows you.
· The end of gathering firewood and if it is wet, well?
· No more worrying about forest fires.
· The end of stubborn Coleman Stoves under fire restrictions.
· More fishing time, as shore lunch time should be reduced

On the downside . . everyone loved . . including myself . . the cosmetics of the outdoor fire at shore lunch.

FALL 1997 Edition

Canada North Lodge

1998 Newsletter

51st Anniversary Fall - Winter Edition

Our 20th Year ! ! ! 1978 - 1998

Thank You Staff for your help in making Canada North Lodge what it is today. We often get requests from our past guests about the staff, if you remember their name, we will try and pass on their address to you.

Looking Back to 1997

The Fishing During 1997

Our fishing on the Woman River Chain of Lakes during 1997 was great, in fact it was superbly excellent. By far better than any year I can remember. Our list of fish caught & released was much larger & the number of smaller walleye has increased dramatically. I had many quests comment about the quality of fishing and how well our conservation policies were working. Yes, we did have several slow down periods, especially during the 1997 May-fly hatch, and during a lengthy period of constant weather front changes, but that’s fishing wherever you go. That’s why we call it fishing not getting. It is with pride that I can look anyone in the eye and honestly tell them the fishing is good. We have dedicated a lot of effort to our conservation policies, and thanks to our guests cooperation, these policies are having a big impact upon making our fishing among the best to be found in NW Ontario. In fact our dream of having a trophy fishery is becoming a reality. The future of fishing at Canada North Lodge can be looked upon as improving dramatically and will become the best. We must all continue to do our part.

Looking Forward to 1998

1998 Sport Shows and Dates

We will be at the following shows in January 1998

Tulsa, Oklahoma - State Fairgrounds - Jan 27 thru Feb 1

Kansas City, Missouri - Bartle Hall - Jan 27 thru Feb 1

We are down to two – from 18. Due to changing conditions in the market place and in our lives, we are pursuing new avenues of marketing. Julie and I both have family responsibilities that curtail our traveling and away from home time. Plus, there have been avenues of marketing that were impossible to pursue while being actively on the road for 3 months. As a result we have gradually dropped many of the shows we attended each year. As they say times change . . and we are changing too. For those of you in the area’s of the shows we have canceled, we have not forgotten you. Our past guests and references are important to us, please give us a call on our nickel. 217-259-6101

A Great Loss – God Bless Them

During the past year we have been informed of the passing of several of our long time guests.

  • Dr. Richard Swift – Grant City, MO
  • Jim Kelley – Lenexa, Kansas
  • Verlie Enyart – Tulsa, Oklahoma

We looked forward to their arrival as our guests and they were looked upon by myself, Julie and staff as truly wonderful persons who loved their fishing trips. It won’t be the same without them, but as always memories will prevail. They will be missed. Might they be in LUNKER HEAVEN . . telling tales?

1998 Rate Information

Good News . . 1998 rates will remain the same as for 1997 with the exception of the following changes.

The Conservation Fishing Policy At CNL

During 1989, The Lodge Owners for Wilderness Preservation initiated a Fishing Conservation Policy. Our goal is to release the larger breeding size fish, while allowing take home limits of quality size fillets. This program promotes natural reproduction and development of a trophy class fishery.

  • The policies that are in effect on our lakes are as follow:
  • Live Release of all Walleye over 19"
  • Live Release of all Northern over 27"
  • Catch & Release of all Smallmouth Bass.

  • For 1998 the following will be added to this policy.
  • Live Release of all Lake Trout 25" and upward.
  • The use of barbless hooks on all crank baits, spinner baits, and other lures not designed to hold bait. The barbs will be pinched down or removed. Barbed single hook jigs and bait rigs used for live bait will be allowed. However, if swallowed, we will encourage cutting the line and leaving lure in place. It will dissolve naturally.
  • Practice proper handling techniques of fish for release.
"Good Fishing News" at CNL

The fish on the Woman River System are doing good. For two weeks during 1997 we continued the fish tagging program with MNR live nets. This fish survey and tagging program produced results that are amazing. In one small area we netted & carefully released a dozen large pike in the 14-20# size and numerous walleyes in the 6#-8# size, plus many other walleyes of all year sizes. We had no idea such numbers could exist in this small area. We assume that only a small percentage of the actual population ended up in our live nets.

The fish were tagged and scale sampled. Their length, weight, & location recorded and then live released. At date we have tagged 618 walleye and northern pike. This information will provide future information about fish growth rates and movement.

In 1996, after years of knowing their existence, we announced that Smallmouth Bass fishing at CNL was a reality. In 1995 two guests caught and released over 30 in one day and the sizes were impressive, many in the 15’ to 17" class. Since, the same has happened many times. A great fish to have in our lakes.

The really encouraging news was the overall fishing during the 1997 season at Canada North Lodge. Our list of fish caught and released under our conservation program increased 25% over the 1996 season. In fact the list, even in very small print, will not fit on one page without many deletions. The number of BIG pike and walleyes are increasing, all year classes are evident & the smaller fish are increasing dramatically.

After 8 years of commitment to our conservation program we are seeing results that were only a wish when we started. All the facts indicate that the spawning size fish that have been released are producing the results as predicted by the MNR.

1998 "Tagged Fish Contest" - Win A 1998 Fishing Trip to CNL

In 1998 our guests can participate in our "Tagged Fish Contest". The following rules are required to qualify.

  • The fisherman must be a registered guest of CNL.
  • The tagged fish must be live released with tag attached.
  • Submit & record the tag #, specie, total & forked length, and location where the fish was caught.
  • Our guides are not eligible, the fish must be guest caught.

Selected tag #’s have values as follow:

  • (6) tags worth $50.00, (6) tags worth $25.00,
  • (6) tags worth $10.00, and (20) tags worth $5.00.
  • All other tags have a minimum value of $2.00.

The tags valued $5.00 thru $50.00 can be submitted only one time, and the value of the tag after the one time submission will be $2.00. A new number will be allocated for that tag and value. The winners and information will be posted at the lodge. The tag #’s will not be posted.

A copy of selected tags and values will be held by someone not associated with CNL for verification in case of dispute.

Additionally all tag #’s submitted will allow one entry per tag in a drawing for a Complimentary Plan 1, 3-day fishing trip in 1998. Multiple entry with same tag # are allowed and a guest can submit more than one entry in the drawing.

Drawing will be held on day of closing and drawn by one of our guides. Two witnesses will be present. The lucky guest will be notified by November 1, 1998. Winner’s name and address will appear in our fall-winter edition 1998 Newsletter. ENJOY!!!

Hunting – Guns – The Canadian Firearms Act

There has been much discussion on this Canadian Government Legislation. The opposition is strong and moves are still being made to get it changed. We receive updated information on this legislation regularly from The Department of Justice Canada.

At this time the real facts for Non Residents are:

For Non Resident Hunters the act will not apply until January of 2001, after that date hunters will be required to register their guns before entering Canada for hunting. Tourist Organizations will have the forms and information to get them registered prior to leaving home. We are not happy about this act which imposes unfair legislation on law abiding sportsmen. We encourage you to write to the Department of Justice Canada with your views on unfair gun legislation. We already have hundreds of laws on the use of firearms . . illegal firearm use and murder continues . . will one more law directed to sportsmen make the difference? I don’t think so . . Do you?

Propane Cooking Stoves at Shore Lunch Sites

As owner’s of Canada North Lodge for the past 20 years, we have always known that forest fires present a very dangerous threat to our lake system, surrounding forests, and our business.

The threat of forest fires is always in the back of our minds and we live in fear of their happening. It has always been known that forest fires are often started with "shore lunch fires". Over the 20 years we have been very careful and instruct our staff on the necessity of being sure that the "shore lunch fires" are built properly and carefully maintained. Above all making sure the fires are dead out before leaving. In fire season we are always first in establishing "Fire Restrictions" well prior to official notification by the MNR.

As the law stands, anyone starting a forest fire, "can and most likely" will be held liable. What this simply means is that a persons life could be destroyed. LIABLE means, paying for costs of the forests fire – little fires cost upwards of $30,000 – big fires you do not want to discuss "perhaps in the millions".

Careless and negligent fires could result in conviction and jail.

For 20 years everything went fine, during the 80’s a small fire was started due to wind and a shore lunch fire. But as fate will have it, 1997 proved to be the end of our good luck. Again, wind and a shore lunch fire started a fire. Due to good luck, a float plane pilot spotted the fire in it’s infancy and reported it. It was put out and remained very small. The cost of this fire was determined to be around $30,000. The CO’s finally determined the fire as not careless and that the wind and hot rocks played a large part in rekindling the fire. Felony charges were not filed and a misdemeanor ticket was given to two of our diligent but scared guides. Bottom line - - it was not fun - - it was terrifying for these guides . . no-one would want to experience it. If not for their honesty, and sincerity, and a very fair Conservation Officer, they would have been paying for a long time.

We have for several years discussed the option of going to all propane cooking stoves at selected shore lunch spots. Starting in 1997 this became fact. We no longer allow open wood fires in any form . . guest built or guide built . . the risk is not worth it. We will strongly enforce this policy in the future.

In 1998 "propane cooking stoves" will be available at selected sites all along the Woman River Chain of Lakes. On portage lakes where shore lunch is allowed, sites will be set up too.

  • The advantages are many when one thinks about it for a minute.
  • The propane stoves cook much faster and can be controlled.
  • The end of trying to get away from the smoke that follows.
  • The end of gathering of fire wood and if it is wet . . well?
  • No more worrying about forest fires.
  • The end of stubborn Coleman Stoves under fire restrictions.
  • More fishing time as shore lunch time will be less time.

On the downside . . everyone loved . . including myself . . the cosmetics of the outdoor fire at shore lunch . . it has vanished. Times change . . things change . . the change is worth it.

Moose Hunting– Plan 6 – Fly-in Hunt

At Canada North Lodge we pride ourselves in thinking that we have one of the best moose hunts available. Our 20 years of commitment & experience in outfitting the hunt speaks for itself. It is our goal to provide our hunters the best in hunting trips. Your success is our success.

As one of the greatest big game hunts on the North American continent, experience the thrills of this wilderness trip. The float plane trip to the remote lake, the daily planning, the frying of bacon and eggs over an early morning fire, the peace and quiet of the wilderness, the thrill of spotting a moose and your jubilant return with the prized Monarch of the North.

Our fly-in Zone 1C Hunts - are 60 to 80 miles to the north of CNL and are accessible only by air. The lakes and area we hunt are very remote, there are no roads, no cabins and no hunting pressure. We have hunted these lakes for years & acquire MNR mini-moose hunting permits each year, thus ensuring that our hunters will be the only hunters in that area. These lakes have a proven history of success.

Our hunting camps (tent camps) are set up for 2 to 4 persons, depending upon the lake. We do not mix parties. The tents are wall tents, of ample size, complete with ground covers, and tarpaulins with a good wood stove for heat. These camps are furnished with the utensils, propane cooking stove, Coleman lanterns, saws, food, and everything to produce a good camp.

Survey trips are run, weather permitting, at least once a week, usually mid week. Your moose will be transported back to the lodge for processing per your instructions.

The 7-day American Plan Moose Hunt includes:

  • Completely outfitted tent camp - complete with ground covers, cots, tarpaulins, wood store, cooking stove, utensils, and Coleman lanterns.
  • Meals - Steaks, pork chops, chicken, ground beef, ham, bacon, eggs, bread, canned soups, luncheon meats, fruits, vegetables, onions, potatoes, coffee, fruit juices & all the necessary items to prepare gourmet outdoor meals.
  • Boat, motor, and plenty of gasoline.
  • Professional Guide Service - one guide per 2 hunters.
  • Float plane transportation, survey trips, and moose transported back to camp for processing.
  • Moose Tags . . Bull or Cow . . no calf tags unless requested, available on a first come first serve basis. Upon booking the adult tag you requested is assigned your name.

A Full Service Package, you bring clothing, gun and ammo, rod and reel, and personal items. Leave the rest to us.

Rate Per Hunter - based on a party of two - $2850.00 US

  • Not Included in rates – Hunting License and export permits.
  • Hunting Dates – September 21 thru October 5, 1998
  • Moose Hunting License $272cdn – Export Permit $30.00cdn
The Woman Lake Outpost Moose Hunt

This hunt is not printed in our brochure. We have only 2 bull tags for the hunt and book without publishing. At this date this hunt which opens on October 12, 1998 is open and will book on a first come first served basis. For outpost features, refer to Outpost in this newsletter. The hunt includes all the features of the Moose Hunt in previous column, with the exception of being a fly-in camp, thus dramatically reducing the cost. Quite honestly, the hunting success for this hunt has been tremendous. My only wish is that we had about 6 more permits. If interested get your name in the hat quickly.

Rate Per Hunter . . based on party of two . . $1750.00 US

Fishing Rods -We advise fishermen to bring along the rod and reels they feel comfortable with using. Casting & spinning are the most popular. Medium to light action rods are advised, they allow the best action and good hook setting ability. Ultra light is often used, hook setting is more difficult but offer tons of action once the fish is hooked.

Reels – Regardless of the manufacturer or type of reel, always ensure that the reel has a good drag system that allow smooth release of the line throughout the range of the reels drag setting & allow easy setting of the drag. If the reel has jerky or erratic release points or is difficult to set, consider the purchase of a new reel. The drag is the most important part. Our guests land big fish with light equipment but it always comes down to proper drag setting while fighting the fish.

Line & line test – 6# to 10# test seem to be the most popular.

8# is a good choice. For casting with larger lures some guests have a second rod equipped with 14# to 17# line. Once again, the drag setting is important, set the reel for the line test, the line must release before it reaches its breaking point. When BIG fish are hooked, set the drag back again allowing for the strong immediate force these fish place on your line.

Fishing Lures – This could be a long list. We advise our guests to bring along the tackle they have and wait until they arrive to find out what the fish are hitting at the time. At the lodge we have a very good selection of the popular lures. You can spend countless $$$ on lures, trying to anticipate what the fish are hitting , only to have most of them remain in the tackle box unused. Various jig and bait rigs tipped with a minnow remain a very inexpensive, popular and effective lure for our type of fishing. Spoons, spinner baits, and crank baits are also used, but that list is endless.

Other very important gearGood raingear is a must, carry it with you every day regardless on how good the day may look. We remind our guests to have it when they arrive, it’s amazing how many don’t take us serious until the rain starts. Sun Screen – buy the highest SPF rating available. Sun burns are serious and seem to happen all at once. Fishermen get hit from, the sun itself, off the boat, and off the water. Add wind burn to it and you can get fried quickly. Long sleeve shirts and a good hat are also a must. Quality sun glasses protect your eyes from the constant sun and water glare. We are in the process of compiling a complete list of fishing gear, tackle, items to bring, clearing customs, suggestions etc. It will be listed on the internet or you can request this list by giving us a call.

The policies that are in effect on our lakes are as follow:
*    Live Release of all Walleye over 19"
*    Live Release of all Northern over 27"
*    Live Release of all Lake Trout over 25"
*    Catch & Release of all Smallmouth Bass.
*    All Large Fish are Released, trophy mounts are produced with replica mounts and are far superior to skin mounts.
*    Designated portage lakes as "Sport Fishing Only." The lakes were selected because of their good fishing, lake size being small, & demand for fishing the lake.
*    Conservation Licenses during 1999 are included in all our Plans. An incentive for participating in "Catch & Release".
*    Encourage the use of barbless hooks on all crank baits, spinner baits, and other lures not designed to hold bait. The barbs can be pinched down or removed. Barbed single hook jigs and bait rigs used for live bait will be allowed. However, if swallowed, we will encourage cutting the line and leaving lure in place. It will dissolve naturally.
*    Practice proper handling techniques of fish for release
.

To the north of the outpost is Big Woman Lake, to the south is Big Bear and Middle Lake, all within 10 miles of the outpost.
